The KPMG Girl and the Anonymous Bully

Less than a week into the New Year, and the first big web story from Ireland has done the rounds on Twitter and Facebook. A video of a young blonde teenage girl, with a slurred but assured middle class Dublin accent, appeared on YouTube on Friday, with the subject of the five-minute piece berating a young male, with a working class Dublin accent, in a fast food restaurant. The video has been taken down and re-uploaded on YouTube on a number of occasions, with the Google-owned company declaring that the video contains "content designed to harass, bully or threaten". Having seen the video, I fully agree and so will not provide a link to it. One can be sure that it will reappear somewhere online over the coming days and weeks, a sad reality, given that, regardless of what the girl says in the video, she is an unwilling participant in its' filming. I'm not a fan of censorship, but freedom of speech is not absolute, especially when the primary motive is the ritual humiliation of the video's target.

For the benefit of those who either have not or do not want to see the clip for themselves, I can provide a synopsis. The girl, clearly inebriated and (according to rumour) a fifth-year secondary school student, is in the middle of a rather heated exchange with the young male operating a camera phone. She boasts of her father's high status within the professional services company KPMG, in contrast to the less glamourous lifestyle of the people engaging her from the next table, exclaiming that the budding cameraman is "not fucking a partner (within KPMG), you're a pleb". The decision to emphasise the class divide in such a manner is a poor one.

It's fair to say that the young lady doesn't cover herself in glory. She tells the male in no uncertain terms that he is a loser who will "never get anywhere" in life, after mocking him for his balding ginger hair. Asking "how much money do you make in an hour, like €10?" is considered rude at the best of times, but incredibly snobbish when done in the midst of an extended recession where at least a quarter of the workforce would be delighted to get such a wage. She sounds obnoxious, and the clever strategy for her on the night would have been to quietly ignore the wind-up merchants, finish off her takeaway, and leave. However, hindsight is 20-20 vision, and the fact that she is evidently drunk may partly explain why she chose to speak her mind so freely, while her youth could explain her lack of maturity, which might have pause and consider the risk of mouthing off in an environment where rogue filming is going on. After all, how many stupid things does any person say or do while intoxicated?

Looking outside of the actual content of the video for a moment, it becomes apparent that there is an issue about context surrounding this clip. The fact that the video's subject appears agitated from the outset suggests that she may have been harassed by the phone's operator before filming begins, given that one simply does not walk into a takeaway and start verbally assaulting a person at another table that they don't know, while simultaneously trying to be pleasant to everyone else at that table. Although we aren't provided with the context leading to the video, it would be absurd to assume that the young woman deliberately targeted an individual for abuse in a takeaway without any reason to do so.

More worryingly, when one again looks at the footage, it becomes evident that the young man is not merely interested in recording their conversation. Barely twenty seconds into the video, he films the girl's legs at close range for a number of seconds, a process he repeats several times more over the five-minute period. This creepy aspect of the filming adds a deeper dimension to an event that is already of questionable legality. One or two brief, incidental shots could probably be dismissed as accidents or poor camera control, but the sustained close-ups suggest a deliberate attempt to get as close to an "upskirt" shot as possible, a seedy level of effort by the anonymous moviemaker. Given that she expresses shock at the exchange being recorded at the end of the video, she obviously did not give permission for anyone to record footage of her legs; the fact that she may also be underage (since a fifth-year secondary school student would be 16 or 17) only serves to make this illicit filming all the more sinister. Four minutes in, he jokes that "every time this bitch says KPMG, we have to take a shot"; indeed, he goads her into repeating the name of the company, mocking her by insisting on how great the company is. The man sounds somewhat worse the wear for drink himself, but it is clear that he is still somewhat in command of his faculties, given his ability to both operate a camera phone and  to continue winding up his target.

To make matters worse, he willingly uploaded the video to YouTube, meaning that he had time to consider his actions but chose to ignore his own sexism, the blatant attempts to make the girl angry and, most disturbingly, his obvious filming of her legs and efforts to inch the camera higher, and upload the video anyway. The most noble reason I can think of for wanting to upload such a video is to provide an illustration of an opinion held by the children of the élite of the "lower orders" in Irish society, a view quite possibly engendered by that child's upbringing and their more privileged background. However, the reality is that this video is clearly designed to mock a drunk teenager, who was the target of some form of unwanted attention, and to "take her down a peg" by humiliating her on a global video-sharing website.

It cannot be underestimated how upsetting this must be for this girl. It is difficult to condone her method of engagement with the cameraman, and even more difficult to agree with her opinion, but it would be a heart of stone to not feel even slightly upset for how devastated she must be. Regardless of class or sex, a 16 or 17 year old is trying to find their place in life, desperately wanting to be accepted by their peers and heavily inclined to feel embarrassed by even the slightest mishap that occurs to them. If you're lucky enough to no longer need ID to get into a pub, try to remember something from your teenage days that still makes you cringe, something that you'd laugh off had it happened today but that still causes red cheeks because you were a teen. Now imagine that incident being recorded, without your knowledge, and placed online for worldwide distribution, without your permission. That girl probably spent the majority of Friday bawling her eyes out, and will dread returning to school on Monday, where she will have to face her peers knowing that they probably all saw the clip over the weekend. She was provoked into a reaction, yet will garner the lion's share of the attention for what she says in the video. She has been, and will continue to be, vilified for her reaction instead of being treated for what she actually is, the victim of cruel social and sexual bullying by a faceless coward who hides behind a camera and uses the footage to further torment his target.

Even if she was obnoxious, was this really worth it?

she is not a victim. stop trying to be the hero and look at her for what she is saying, a snobby idiot.

@Tigaroo She was drunk. Have you never said something (or done something) you ordinarily would not have when you were drunk?

Very thoughtful post, I enjoyed this. Definitely a valid perspective. Makes you wonder how much of this is fuelled by angry sexist men.

What a pile of rubbish! The recording was fair game as it was in the public domain. As for anything sinister being involved in this recording and the motive behind the same, is that the best you can come up with? She got drunk, she got caught, she needs to deal with the consequences of her actions and move on.

God we all need a hero, there are a couple of important factors that you have missed out on. The most important is her parents and their obviously bad parenting to raise someone with such a horrible and obnoxious attitude towards life and others. She is clearly under 18 and should not be out in such a state from been drunk to looking like a tramp, secondly when did daddy's wage become family dinner chat? Why would a parent obviously boast about what a big wheel he is at the cracker factory, in this case KPMG.. In terms of the camera men, yes they are probably like any other drunk males and a flash of her knickers while standing up is not exactly perving with a camera under the table. You see the same on the Luas or on grafting st any Saturday night.

In conclusion, it's her parents that are to blame, she is obviously spoilt, gets her own way(pierced tongue) and has a horrible outlook towards other people. I am glad this video is made public its highlighting terrible parenting in our time.

Getting absolutely hammered is in no way a defence to being as abusive as she was and how derogatory she was too. If this film involved a homeless person or a person addicted to drugs of the same age as her, no one would give an ounce of thought to it. However because she is a young, middle class girl it has created an abundance of interest.

It is a shame she was recorded and I do understand she would be distraught but this would not have happened if she did not act in such a disgraceful and horrendous way. Her comments relating to 10 euro an hour, her comments about Pennys and further on how she stated that the cameraman was a pleb was horrendous.

She should be ashamed and hopefully this will change her outlook on how to treat people who may be not as well off as her.

And Irishjohn that comment about "angry sexist men" is odd. You don't have to be angry, sexist nor male to understand that the way she acted was awful.

Absolute rubbish. She's not a victim. You left out the bit of the video where she repeatedly hits the girl the lads are sitting with over the head multiple times. You also missed the bit where she came to sit at their table while her friends are sitting at a different table. And since when is being drunk an excuse a reason for behaviour like that? Alcohol is NOT an excuse and never will be. No one should drink if that was the case. Did it ever cross your mind that she started on them? I mean like most drunk people in Dublin who take something the wrong way?

He looks at her legs because the girl beside her is pointing out her lack of shoes, you knob end.

You left out the part where she keeps knocking the girl on the head or where she attacks a guy and breaks his phone. I had a look at her twitter account before it was locked to the public and in almost every photo, she's with a glass of wine or some alcoholic drink so this furthers my view of her parent's being just as blamed as her.

Dreading going back to school? Are you kidding? She'll get a hero's welcome from her fellow Mounties.

She was the bully here and abused people in public. In some jurisdictions this might even be considered a hate crime. Well, she didn't get beaten up like could easily have happened to young snobby lad in similar situation.

@cormac come on, no need to guilt trip people who watch someone make an arse out of themselves, like the guy who slipped on the snow. What she did was stupid but also funny as in laughing at not with, it's old news already

I blame her parents who sound like complete idiots, they obviously have no control over thier kids to allow them to go out drinking illegally, allowing them to get into such a state and behave in such a horrible way. The parents must sit around boasting of their income, employment and fabulous lifestyle which then echos through their spawn

If that's what she's like when she's drunk, can only imagine what she's like in general.

@Area5100 how out of touch with reality are. You're going after her parents because shes drinking underage. Is that not the national pastime of nearly every teenager in this country at some stage. Stop trying to be so dramatic.

Both herself and the person recording acted stupidly. Clearly she doesn't have the best outlook on life, but she is only 17,I'm sure most of us did or said something at that age that we wouldn't like to have been recorded.

The person recording felt the need to "run and tell" just because a young girl was mean to him.

Also the absolute hatred she is receiving really is shocking. Can people not look at this for what it is, some drunk girl acting silly. Laugh and then move on.

probably the best thing that will ever happen to this idiot. im willing to bet everything i own that in the next 5 years she will have a glossy cover story in "life" magazine (which seems to specialize in glorifying this morons older peers) complete with expensive photoshoot and awful tagline like "back from the brink, irelands bad girl" etc. call a spade a spade, this girl deserves everything she gets.

Both of these individuals are victims. Both are victims of too much alcohol. The female is a victim of her upbringing if she thinks that being a daughter of a partner in KPMG will solve all her problems. The male is a victim of his upbringing in that he believes that putting somebody down is making him any better than the person he is trying to put down

@raoulduke no I'm not out of touch with reality, I'm fully aware of underage drinking in this country. Yes I am blaming the parents, not underage drinking, would she act exactly the same if she was in a cafe drinking cappuccinos? Probably

From her video it says a lot abiut her upbringing which yes is the parents responsibility.

1. Quite obviously spoilt (Manolo Blaniks)
2. No concept of money (telling people who earn €10 ph are povs)
3. gets her own way (pierced tongue, out drinking at 16/17)

Irrational and arrogant people like her should not get into that state if they are 16 or 36 and IMO its their upbringing, someone like her probably needs guidance in life something her parents have severely failed to do

A lot of bullshit presumptions. Camera man was actually sound to her-how would you react to someone speaking to you you like that? She was over at their table, bare foot eating their (strangers) scraps, got a little slagging for acting like such a 'pleb' and couldn't take it. And those opinions of hers didn't just form when she got drunk. Pity it went viral, but hopefully its a lesson horribly learnt

A brilliant piece. I couldn't believe the extent of the band wagoners jumping to this girls attack. We only have the video as per what the male recorded and chose to show us, and we can't allow ourselves to be so narrow minded to the extent that we believe she wasn't provoked, and probably harshly , prior to the video. Consider this. Say, hypothetically, the male started having a go at her for being a D4 snob, daddys girl etc, and wound her up to the point she decided "hell to this, im goina make them sorry they said this" and then went down the road she did. Then it wouldn't look so bad, would it? It would rather represent her defending herself. Just a possibility, a consideration... ( and as possible as any other prelude; as i said, we simply don't know what happened before the video)

In short, I was hugely disappointed with the narrow mindedness, and more importantly , the lack of responsibility shown by the masses to the video and the girl. What the 99% have been is cyber-bullies these last few days, fueling the hate train that we all know can lead to the ultimate travesty (need i mention the so recent Erin G). Wake up children, bullying is against school rules.

So a young spoiled piece of shit spews some vulgar hate speech and she's sympathised with for bullying? Really? If she decided to say those things she is responsible and what's wrong with sharing her opinions with the world? so if more than those at rays pizza heard the rant is bullying ?

Deezer said...

It wasn't 'hate speech'. She is just a drunk kid. I loved your piece, and I despair at all the self-appointed 'judge, jury and executioners' online that are relishing the 'taking down' of an over-privileged teenager, and hiding behind the pathetic excuse that this consequence is in any waty proportional to the actions of the girl. Pathetic. If people think that what was done to that girl is really a deserved 'punishment' for being a drunken twat, then they should take a long look at themselves.

And it IS sexist. They focused on her knickers at the beginning. There was a pervy element to this.

Well done for being one of the ADULTS who are not ok with the bullying of a minor. Pity there aren't more like you.

The REAL victim here is KPMG. has any1 thought of the harm this will do them?? I will be doing a collection for the KPMG victim this weekend. Please give something.
This "article" is a total joke. You make stupid assumptions all over the place, and you know what assumption is the mother of....
I do feel for her but from the contents of the video she is in the wrong and I would have put up the video myself. I just hope the father gets laughed at as much as she does. Id say he's a complete pleb himself to have allowed his daughter to become so spoilt.
All I can say is I hope she can ignore the attention (from me here included) to allow this yo blow over. We've seen to many cases of cyber bullying causing the victim to look st permanent solution to a temporary problem.

Oh dear, can't believe the author of this blog would attempt to defend this kind of behaviour by painting KPMG girl as victim and the abused as perpetrators. Outrageous. Won't be back here again.
